Westport, NY, Apr 07, 2011 — There were flurries of snow in parts of the North Country yesterday, but there were also some unambiguous signs of spring.

May 25, 2010 — Schuyler Island, on Lake Champlain, is one of the most historic places in the North Country. Benedict Arnold fled there with his rebel fleet after the Battle of Valcour Island in 1776.

These days, the 120-acre island is part of the Adirondack Park, with wild forests and meadows and marshes. Brian Mann paddled to Schuyler Island for a camping trip last weekend and sends this audio postcard.  Go to full article

Dec 29, 2009 — The Crown Point bridge across Lake Champlain was demolished yesterday morning, just after ten o'clock. The span had served as a major link between Vermont and upstate New York for eight decades. It became a part of the North Country landscape and lore. Deterioration of the bridge and its closure in mid-October have crippled the Champlain Valley economy, straining ties between communities on both sides of the lake. As Brian Mann reports, many local people hope that yesterday's massive explosion marks a first step toward getting their lives back to normal.  Go to full article

Dec 11, 2008 — Winter is still coming and going down in the valleys of the North Country, with days of rain mixed with ice and snow. But up in the high country, true winter is already locked in, turning summits into windswept, lunar landscapes. Brian Mann went trekking on Bald Peak near Elizabethtown recently with his dog Sara. Dec 01, 2008 — This is the time of year when towns along the Champlain Valley light up with the annual Holiday Train. Sep 09, 2008 — All this week we're telling stories about horses and horse-racing, a sport which for decades has been part of North Country culture. Today, Brian Mann sends this audio postcard from the harness track in Saratoga. May 27, 2008 — Wildlife biologists say that New York state is home to more than 500 moose. Their population has surged in recent years. Researchers would like to know a lot more about the animals: what they're eating, where they're going, and why their numbers are growing so rapidly. A new project organized by the Wildlife Conservation Society aims to gather some of that data using trained tracking dogs.
