The North Country Reads ProjectHundreds of communities across the country have one book programs, which encourage the whole community, whether it be village, country or state, to read and talk about the same book. The programs foster literacy and promote meaningful discussion across every segment of the population, as well as put a positive face on the community. North Country Reads is one such project, focused on one book per year, and involving the communities of Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties. In order to facilitate widespread participation in the project, the lead agencies in the collaboration, Flower Memorial Library of Watertown, Jefferson County Community College, and North Country Public Radio, have brought in other participating groups and funding sources: to host events centered on the selected book, to purchase copies of the book for libraries, youth book groups, schools and retirement communities, and to promote and extend the project into communities throughout the North Country. In North Country Read's third year, 2008, we are proud to present The Language of Baklava, by Diana Abu-Jaber, as our selection. Join us in celebrating community reading! |
