Watertown Daily Times backs Owens, blasts Hoffman

A day after Republican Dede Scozzafava dropped out of the NY-23 special election, the Watertown Daily Times -- the biggest newspaper in the district -- backed Democrat Bill Owens.

It's a dramatic shift, especially for a newspaper which generally has a (small-c) conservative-leaning editorial page.

Here's the WDT's take on Owens:

Of the two, Bill Owens is by far the superior and only choice.

The Democratic candidate has demonstrated a willingness to listen to people about ways in which he could help the district as their representative in Washington. Mr. Owens has remained focused on the economy and job creation throughout his campaign. At the same time, he has shown an understanding of the military, a keen desire to help dairy farmers, an ability to work with labor unions and an eagerness to learn more about the vast, 11-county district that he hopes to represent.

Mr. Owens seems to approach politics and challenges with an open mind, a generous spirit and a can-do attitude. He has conducted a dignified campaign in comparison to Doug Hoffman.

The WDT editorial attack on Doug Hoffman, meanwhile, is flat-out blistering. WDT describes the Conservative from Lake Placid as "an ideologue."

If he carries out his pledges on earmarks, taxation, labor law reform and other inflexible positions, Northern New York will suffer.

This rural district depends on the federal government for an investment in Fort Drum and its soldiers, environmental protection of our international waterway and the Adirondack Park, and the livelihood of all our dairy farmers across the district, among other support.

Our representative cannot be locked into rigid promises and policies that would jeopardize these critical sectors of our economy.

For a member of Congress, there may be a time to promote reform in Washington, but there is also a time to work within a system that best serves the people you represent.

It is frightening that Mr. Hoffman is so beholden to right-wing ideologues who dismiss Northern New Yorkers as parochial when people here simply want to know how Mr. Hoffman will protect their interests in Washington.

Hoffman believes in the Kennedy/Reagan approach to government. Personal reliance and less federal government intervention. Owens support more government, more deficits, and a bankrupt future for our children and grandchildren. Stop the madness of mortgaging our future so we can have more now. Vote for Hoffman!

Richly Spoken

The thought of Hoffman winning this election is absolutely chilling to me. Frank Rich has a piece in today's NY Times that describes what Hoffman, Palin, et al stand for, and what anyone who votes for him will be voting for.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/01/opinion/01rich.html?_r=2

". . .the electoral math is less interesting than the pathology of this movement. Its antecedent can be found in the early 1960s, when radical-right hysteria carried some of the same traits we’re seeing now: seething rage, fear of minorities, maniacal contempt for government, and a Freudian tendency to mimic the excesses of political foes. Writing in 1964 of that era’s equivalent to today’s tea party cells, the historian Richard Hofstadter observed that the John Birch Society’s “ruthless prosecution” of its own ideological war often mimicked the tactics of its Communist enemies."

Great the NY TImes is going to decide our future. The same paper that lied to us about the "Gulags".
that just laid off 1oo people. That exposed and ruined our ability to track Terrorists. that wants Terrorist tried in Civilian courts. that got kidnapped in Afganistan and got a young soldier killed trying to rescue him. This is the Paper of Record for whom? The Communists. IT DODES NOT WORK!
What is the love affair with taking from others and giving to thugs instead of Producers?
STOP THE MADNESS.
VOTE FOR HOFFMAN

Most of the people leaving these comments probably are unemployed and don't even live in our district.

I'm a Republican and still voting for DeDe, because I can't stand to vote for a carpetbagging nutjob like Hoffman.

I'm sick of people trying "National" approaches to our LOCAL problems, and with his conservative politics, I don't think Hoffman is going to do anything for us constituents, I think he's simply just trying to advance his own career.

I doubt he knows what Canton smells like in the spring, or what troop deployment means to Watertown businesses.

i am not from New York.
is troop deployment a business to you? i thought Hoffman is from new york and worked on the Olympics? i can see why you would not trust a successful businessman. and i don't believe for one second that you are voting for dede. you will vote for Owens because you were ALWays going to vote for big government OWENS.

go hoffman.take back the republic.
every vote for hoffman sends a chill down the spine of the One World Order Commies!

The Conservative right wing extremists are like the American Taliban. Don't let the American Taliban and carpetbaggers take over your community for their ideological purposes. If they do, from there it will only encourage them to spread their warped facist ideology. At this point, voting for Dede is a wasted vote and will help Hoffman. I urge NY23 to vote for Owens.

Dede is a RINO who will expose herself with an endorsement of the DEMOCRAT. She is a stealth socialist against secret ballots for labor organizers.

Thank God for HOFFMAN and the REAL AMERICANS who support freedom and economic liberty, unlike the other stealth socialists at the Watertown Daily.

anonymous says don't vote for Carpetbaggers they will take over with "idealological purposes". What would that be, Freedom of speech, less government control, unions theory (socialist) spread the wealth around. What happens when the wealth is gone, who spreads, then. We have that now, it's called WELFARE and they get enough. I am a union member (1199) and I DO NOT AGREE WITH THEIR THINKING, Owen's is just a lackey for the Democrats. Just another LAWYER to screw up the government. Lets get Congress back to the people, FOR THE PEOPLE. Lets get TERM LIMITS. If congress passes health care reform they need to take the same plan we have but you WILL NOT SEE THAT. I sick of Liberals telling me, you can't tell a joke, you can't eat that, you can't smell that, you can't, you can't. ENOUGH. Times are tough, you can't fix it with more money. Tighten your belts, CONGRESS WON'T DO IT, elect some one with the right approach, a business man. Go Hoffman.

Do you suggest we do away with public schooling? How about roads and highways?

What good has pooling together for the betterment of society ever done?

By the way, it is not communist to think this way, it is liberal

Frank Rich and the New York Times are both delusional and will promulgate any lie to achieve their leftist political agenda - just like the anonymous coward here that's calling Republicans "right wing Taliban."

As someone who was born in Watertown and has had Watertown connections throughout my life it have to say this endorsement is more than dramatic, it is seismic. The Watertown Times is and has always been a Republican paper albeit old style Republican of the pre-Rush Limbaugh, Beck and Palin days. For them to endorse a Democrat is major but I'm glad they did. It points out just how extreme the conservative movement has gotten.

Turk, Good lesson in Orwellian Newspeak.

"Progress" is a concept from the Enlightenment that postulated the democratic advancement of free, educated citizens in a free economy.

"Progressive" is theft of that concept by socialists and Marxists who want tyranny to be installed by an all powerful government.

"Liberal" as you imagine yourself is a 19th century term for what free market Republicans believe in.

"Liberal" as the brain-dead Democrat voters of today are simply Fabian Socialists (look it up) who are too ignorant to know that they are voting for incremental tyranny and are voting against the prosperity of the average citizen.

Today's Democrat: Ignorance With An Attitude.

1.  The WDT is a back water rag that is not worth the paper on which it is printed. The NYT has become a punchline.

2.  To Mr. CoffeeJunkly - I live in NY23 and I have a real job that pays me well. This election is more about local politics, it is about stoppin the madness of SHO and his ban of marxist socialist who admire Chairman Mao over our founding fathers. SO pretty much screw you.

3. Carpartbagger? Was that an issue when the mother of all carpetbaggers (hillary) won here senate seat.

4. Time to take the countyr back - a vote for Mr Hoffman is the first step.

Mr. Hoffman is standing for the vast majority of this nation and residents of the North country when he stands up against the Political party hacks whether they be Republican or Democrat. The Tea party movement is taking this nation back from the professional politicians!

GO HOFFMAN

As a resident of District 23 and someone who has known Doug and his family for most of my life, enough already! Owens hasn't, to my knowledge, ever stepped foot in the Adirondacks, and does not now or has he ever spoken or represented me. It is time for the voters of this area, and this country, to step up to the plate and get rid of the nuts in Washington. Cap in Trade? National Health Care? Bail-Outs? I don't want to pay for them, do you?

Vote for Hoffman and stop the madness!

I would like to remind Ed that the mortgaging began under President Bush.Mr. Hoffman can not even give a rudimentary position on Fort Drum or the lake and river level policies. During the editorial board at the Watertown Daily Times he complained that he should had been given the questions in advance. If he is unable to think on his feet in a forum as simple as a editorial board do we want that individual in Washington?

Hey Turk.... nice definition of liberal. TOO BAD IT DOESN'T MATCH REALITY. You mention open-minded and tolerant..... unless you are conservative, then you are called a wingnut, a teabagger or a racist.
You also mention generosity and giving..... well it has been shown that conservatives on average donate 30% more than liberals and Red states are usually more generous than Blue states. This comes from professor Arthur Brooks, author of "Who Really Cares". It appears to me that Liberals are only "generous" with other folks money.
You also mention maximum individual freedom..... now that one I found particularly funny. I have never seen a group of people so eager to tell others how to live their life as the so called liberals. They try to dictate what kind of car you should drive, what kind of food you should eat, they favor the redistribution of wealth, the repeal of the second ammendment, and in California they even want to outlaw home schooling.

There was another man who outlawed homeschooling, favored strong gun control, was a vegetarian, and an early enviromentalist. He was also a strong supporter of redistribution of wealth.....unfortunately it belonged to the Jewish people.

Are you SURE you are a liberal???

A candidate like Scozzafava who has the support of a downstate ACORN affiliate, supports big government, opposes secret ballots at union elections, and advocates gay marriage is hardly a moderate.

Dede would do well to advocate reforms in Albany to restore curtailed liberties to New Yorkers and introduce reforms to promote the renaissance of the Empire State's economic engine.

The ultrasocialists/ Marxists have perverted the meaning of liberal. Social programs financed at the point of a gun or by the implied threat of government force should not be mistken for charitable endeavors.

Quo warranto, B.O.?

How can anyone quote the NY Times and think that is smart commentary?

AND no one cares who the WDT endorses, no one.

And Palin is out of touch? This coming from the party that is beholden to George Soros money? The same European socialist who despises this country as it was founded - FREE!

Yep, them there liberals sure are the smart people.

I just wish the Fox viewers would look up the meaning of the word "cartel." Your over the top free market extremism results in the same tyranny that comes with a totalitarian communist dictatorship.

Compromise and finding solutions that work for everyone is what made your country great, not hard lining ideologues.
