Mr. Hoffman flirts with irresponsible politics

The Watertown Daily Times is reporting on Conservative candidate Doug Hoffman's claim in a fundraising letter that “ACORN, the unions and the Democratic Party” “tampered” with results to deny him victory.

Jude Seymour's article continues with this:

Mr. Hoffman provided no evidence to support his claims, but asked fellow conservatives to send donations his way to “ensure every vote is counted.”

Jerry O. Eaton, Jefferson County Republican elections commissioner, called Mr. Hoffman's assertion “absolutely false.”

George Williams, Oswego County Republican chairman, also rejected Mr. Hoffman's claims.

Hoffman spokesman Rob Ryan declined to offer support for claims that anything undue had occurred during the NY-23 balloting.

“When and if we challenge the election, we will lay out the evidence on these matters,” he said.

To make such an explosive claim in a fundraising letter -- and then to decline to offer evidence -- is, in a word, irresponsible.

Mr. Hoffman came remarkably close to winning a seat in Congress and appears to have a bright political future ahead of him, should he choose to stay in the game.

But making reckless claims of this kind can only harm his own credibility, a credibility already frayed by his close association with figures like Glenn Beck.

What, pray tell, brought you to the conclusion that such a dimwit has a "bright political future"?

Making serious allegations without a shred of evidence is not simply irresponsible, it's borderline slanderous.

I know his fundraising letter was phrased that way because he wanted to make sure he took potshots at all the far right scapegoats but he should either provide evidence or retract his claim.

Though it no doubt does make voters of the district feel relieved that this man is not representing them in DC.

I feel sorry for you leftist that are being led like pigs to the slaughter by our upcoming socialistic nation. This was a free nation for the people by the people, not to be led by big Government! Doug Hoffman is feared by Washington because he will not follow them and has free will, unlike the current establishment in Washington. Horray for Doug and my hat is off to a true PATRIOT!

Doug Hoffman is feared by Washington? Doug Hoffman would have been given a closet office in Washington and ignored completely. He is as irrelevant as he could possibly be on the national level. His continued wacked out right wing slogans, and attacks are ridiculous. To accuse local election officials (Republican and Democrats alike) Of ACORN like practices is stupid. It shows the guy is totally out of touch with local people, and answers to the radical right and will spout out whatever trash they tell him to say.

Dear 9:48 AM anon who raves about courgeous patriots but hasn't the guts to sign his comments: can you please write original comments based on the entries in question rather than just spamming pro-Hoffman hagiographies.

Dear gentle readers, let's not blow any gaskets so close to the holiday! Also watch out for that nasty "NY-23" virus that has been circulating since the election. A good shot of North Country independence and pragmatism can help fend off the ill-effects of outside interference, a poor loser, and big name party types. Trashed reputations? stolen elections? We aren't perfect, but all this stuff is foreign to the north country I know and love. We need to forget the labels and the "isms" and continue to work together, for surely "a house divided against itself can not stand". Otherwise, we don't stand a chance.

Dear 9:59 AM post:

For starters, Doug's office probably would have been the one that John McHugh occupied....hardly in the bowels of the building.

As far as Brian and the 9:48 AM comment:

Hoffman would have been an interesting figure in DC because 1) he did not need the job, 2) would have taken a pay cut if he won the election, leading to 3) in politics there is no more dangerous individual than the one who does not need the money.

Brian, however, is correct since this discussion is tangential to the original topic.

I am posting anonymously...please go easy on me :)

Anon: 11:11. Not so. Congress is as status and seniority conscious as the Ming Dynasty in assigning digs. Hoffman, as a freshman of the minority party--and on the outs even from that party--would be lucky to get a converted steam closet.

As a one-time DC lobbyist I can confirm that one thing Dale Hobson just said is absolutely correct.

Hoffman would have had zero chance of getting the office formerly used by McHugh...Staffers from other offices up the seniority chain would have been peeking through the door of McHugh's office the day after his nomination was announced.

Doug Hoffman is a legend in his own mind apparently. Shoots off his mouth before engaging his brain. This most recent example of disinformation clearly illustrates why the voters of NY 23 turned thumbs down on his candidacy.
He apparently thinks the residents of this district are boobs. Wake up and smell the coffee Doug. You lost fair and square.

There were a few things about Doug Hoffman that bothered me, but the clincher was his conceding the Congressional seat so soon: Didn't he know about the absentee ballots??

Crazy stuff.

An accountant should be able to come up with a much better fund raising ploy. Sorry Doug, but the hole you are digging for yourself gets deeper by the minute

Oh man, I'm laughing sooo hard reading through these postings.

Love the wit and humor. Seriously.

Enjoy the pros and cons presented, and that sentiment is not just limited to this particular thread.

Some pretty crazy stuff sometimes.

Anyway, enough brown nosing.

A poster at another thread dealing with H'mans concession wrote that Hoffman claims he was "forced" to concede.

Sincerely,
Frank Gaffney's Eyebrow

That demonstrates a lack of character to me.
