Hacketts files for bankruptcy

North Country retailer Hacketts will enter bankruptcy protection in an attempt to restructure its debt.

This move comes after a year of financial struggles and public offerings that raised pointed questions over management of the company. Listen to David Sommerstein's special report on Hacketts here.

The Watertown Daily Times reports that Hacketts' debt led to a court ruling that recently froze the company's bank account. Quoting the article by Nancy Madsen:

"We've been reorganizing by dealing with our creditors on an individual basis," Hacketts Chief Executive Officer Thomas W. Scozzafava said. "It's been a constant whack-a-mole situation, if you will, which makes us unable to run the company. Bankruptcy protection will allow us to do it in a more organized fashion, albeit more expensive."

We'll have more on this story this afternoon on All Before Five.

Why did it never come out that Hoffman got his start because the taxpayers funded over $6 million dollars to keep the Olympics from going bankrupt? That was bailout money that he accepted. That is a bigger story than this.

When I went to visit my daughter at SLU, I always made it a point to visit Hackett's. I will miss the store.

Everyone will have their theory as to why this didn't happen before the election -- truth is, if you've paid attention, this could have been telegraphed starting about two years ago. Hacketts, and by extension the Seaway Valley Corp., were well on the way to filing for bankruptcy long before Obama was considering McHugh for Army Secretary. Anyway, I agree with Mike's comment -- I liked Hacketts as a place to shop when I was in St. Lawrence County, and it's too bad to see that it won't work out...

Another N. Country business goes belly up.
Tom Scozzafava's business enterprises that are having reported as having problems include a local brewery and bakery as well. Depressing news in "recessing" times.
