Frank Rich (hearts) Hoffman
The liberal New York Times columnist has embraced Conservative Doug Hoffman, not for his politics, but for what Frank Rich thinks this campaign is doing to the Republican Party.
The right’s embrace of Hoffman is a double-barreled suicide for the G.O.P. On Saturday, the battered Scozzafava suspended her campaign, further scrambling the race. It’s still conceivable that the Democratic candidate could capture a seat the Republicans should own.
But it’s even better for Democrats if Hoffman wins. Punch-drunk with this triumph, the right will redouble its support of primary challengers to 2010 G.O.P. candidates they regard as impure. That’s bad news for even a Republican as conservative as Kay Bailey Hutchison, whose primary opponent in the Texas governor’s race, the incumbent Rick Perry, floated the possibility of secession at a teabagger rally in April and hastily endorsed Hoffman on Thursday. It's been a bizarre experience, looking at the North Country through the lens of national media figures like Rich.
Here's an example of Rich's view of our corner of New York state:
...without the federal government largess that the tea party crowd so deplores, New York’s 23rd would be a Siberia of joblessness. The biggest local employer is the pork-dependent military base, Fort Drum.A Siberia of joblessness. Nice. Read the full article here.

Frank Rich is a delusional leftist that will promulgate any lie or distortion to move his radical socialist agenda. He fits in perfectly with the rest of the NY Times, living in a parallel universe where intentions and feelings matter more than actions, consequences and reality.
Rich and his ilk are also the most patronizing of hypocrites because they truly believe that us 'regular people' would die of our own stupidity were it not for their benevolent guidance. And yet they would never even consider living under the same rules they want to impose on us.
Somehow I'm not surprised that the lefties at NCPR would feature Rich's hallucinatory screeds.
To addend my previous comment, maybe I should have said I'm not surprised that 'the lefty' at NCPR would feature Rich's hallucinatory screeds.
For the most part you guys have done a great job covering the 23rd. So Brian, where's the counterpoint to Rich? How about some balance?
Rich is so right. A little play on words there. Fort Drum is obviously the anchor in the area. For over 140 years the Republicans have won national offices up here. Young people have to leave the area to find go paying jobs. The two old sayings up here is that the area is 50 years behind the times and proud of it and you could run a cow up here on the republican ticket and they would beat the democratic candidate.
Having just moved from Ft Drum after 3 long (cold) years, I can say without bias that Watertown, and most of the outlying villages, would indeed be jobless if it weren't for Ft Drum. I could never stomach the Watertown Times because of its liberal lean, and I can't stop myself from saying that regardless of a candidate's point of view or political persuasion, they'd be pulling for the Democrat. When will NNY produce a FAIR, balanced newspaper that can adequately give justice to each candidate so that voters will vote for the candidate that's best for their district? Imagine if Ft Drum were closed (most people stationed there do NOT like Ft Drum, and most of us - after being there once - will avoid being stationed there a second time)? What would NNY do to sustain itself???
Frank, you have it all wrong. It's people waking up and seeing what a looser Obama is
the only loser we've had in the last nine years was George Bush.He started the mess.
Obama has quadrupled the deficit. He is dragging the Democratic Party further and further to the left. It is the left wing of the Democratic Party which is extremist. Hoffman is a fiscal and social conservative. He is in the mainstream. Fiscal and social conservatism is not extremist. The Democratic Party is heading for a crash. Just give it enough time.
The Siberia you speak of is because we've put all of our economic eggs in one basket.
Heres the problem...Ft Drum is the largest employer in Watertown. The Apartment complex's throughout Watertown raised rental rates based upon a soldiers Basic Housing Allowance, not the mainstream income of the local community as state it should be by the Supreme Court. A 3 bedroom townhouse apartment at 1190 a month in Watertown NY...You kidding me? Thats nothing but class discrimination. Wish I had the cash for the lawyer.
A candidate who has the support of a downstate ACORN affiliate, supports big government, opposes secret ballots at union elections, and advocates gay marriage is hardly a moderate.
She would do well to advocate reforms in Albany to restore curtailed liberties to New Yorkers and introduce reforms to promote the renaissance of the Empire State's economic engine.
First it was Appalachia, now it's Siberia?
Rich is right, since the army welfare has moved in with their socialist system of pay and health care, the only people who have benefit are the army contractors, and ex military or their family. To bad we didn't get an army housing allowance in our pay.We could afford a $900.00 morgage payment. These people don't realize that private money pays their wages. Not goverment, the north country has been here before fort drum and we did just fine then and we will again.
Raising Taxes is not going to bring our job's back to the north country. That's a fact people. The liberal base is running all the good job's out of NY.
Raising the taxes aren't going to keep our jobs in NY. Their running these jobs right out of the state of NY
We need more private money spent in the northcountry not Goverment money. BILL CLINTON raised taxes on the rich and the northcountry boomed or has 8yrs of BUSHONOMICS left you with a mental block?
