The fourth estate in the Adirondack-North Country

I attended part of a fascinating gathering yesterday in Blue Mountain Lake: journalists from across the North Country coming together to talk about the challenges of writing and reporting in small, far-flung towns.

The event was organized by the Adirondack Center for Writing and the Blue Mountain Center.

There were some amazing presenters (I'm flu-buggy, so I didn't get to spend as much time with them as I would have liked) including veteran Will Doolittle (who writes now for the Glens Falls Post Star) and Michael Hill, who works out of Albany but covers a lot of North Country stuff.

Also on-hand was John Warren, who founded the Adirondack Almanack blog.

The journalism world is in freefall these days, but my sense for a while now -- re-enforced by yesterday's gathering -- was that our region is experiencing something of a renaissance.

The Post Star just won a Pulitzer. The Adirondack Daily Enterprise has its strongest stable of reporters and editors that I've seen in my ten years here.

Regional papers in Watertown and Plattsburgh are devoting a lot of serious reporting time to the Adirondack region.

We also have two brilliant regional magazines -- Adirondack Explorer and Adirondack Life -- that offer very different reads.

What else? Mountain Lake PBS has one of the most aggressive local production schedules of any small public television station in the country.

We have great commercial radio news teams scattered around the region, along with NCPR and VPR (which does great Champlain Valley coverage).

I'm leaving a lot of folks out -- from Denton Publications in Etown to the Malone Telegram -- but you get the point.

For a region that boasts a total population well under half a million, that's a lot of ink being spilled.

What do you think? When you pick up your newspaper in the morning (or tune in your TV or radio station) are you hearing the kind of news that you want? If not, what would you like to see or hear that's different?

I would like the fourth estate to hold State gov't's feet to the fire in the hope that gov't would get their head out of the sand. This is the news I look for.

I'd like to see less news of Vermont on NCPR.

NCPR can be heard by tens of thousands of Vermonters. Many make membership contributions to the station, and Vermont businesses and cultural organizations buy station underwriting. Why would NCPR not report on stories relevant to its audience?

Tens of thousands of NY residents can hear VPR. Do we expect them to cover NYS news and events? Makes no sense to me, but it probably does to those controlling the purse strings in Canton.

You asked the question, I answered.

Apparently VPR feels the same way we do about their NY members and listeners: These stories from the VPR News archive page just from the last two days:

Albany, NY (11/12/09)
The Legislature and Gov. David Paterson have agreed to close a loophole affecting criminals convicted a second time for murder or child sexual assault.

Bret4207 has his own facts and opinions.
Dale, you could have given a million legitimate citations.
Bret4207 has his own facts and opinions.
Just as he keeps comparing the entire FOX News lineup up infotainers, with MSNBC's Kieth Olbermann. And this will be the last time I'm leaping to Bret4207's bait about Olbermann.
Kieth Olbermann was one of the few national pundits who had the audacitiy to take on the Bush Administration. He was spot on in his observations and reporting. His style is rather pompous, but that is Kieth's way of poking fun of O'Reilly and Beck.
He does not see any difference between Olbermann's daily mocking of FOX News for making up the "news" and FOX News daily making up the news.

Must be what it means to be a true Conservative.

What fits Bret4207 view of good radio? FM 102.7?

Frank, are you and Olbermann on the same bowling team or something?

Yes, yes, yes, Keith Olbermann is god, the only truth reporter out there, never a false word issues from his lips. You just keep right on believing that. And Al Gore invented the internet and Bill Clinton never had sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky, it was all part of a vast right wing conspiracy, just like when the right wingers got NBC to blow up a truck that wouldn't burn and they made Sandy Berger put those classified documents in his socks and they made Clinton take all those illegal bribes from the Chinese in exchange for missile tech, and Hillary really didn't know anything about anything that ever happened anywhere and that's why she's the smartest woman in the world, and Bill Ayers really is a nice guy that Obama on;y sorta knew a little bit , and....

Open you eyes, evaluate yourself and realize you are just as flawed as everyone else. This elitist view that anyone right of Chairman Mao is a lying idiot just makes you look foolish.

What the...?

Since Bret4207 really believes what he says, I am now convinced of the errors of my Chairman Moa loving ways. Oh my, how mislead I've been watching that damned Olbermann! Drudge is now my main source of news. However it must be said that even Drudge doesn't cover all the juicy news. Some things don't get reported even by Drudge.
For example, during the Tianamen Square demonstrations in Beijing, Bill Clinton (not Neal Bush) had a multimillion dollar construction deal with the Red Chinese. If the U.S. would have protested the subsequent crackdown on the demonstrators by the Red Army, Clinton may have lost about $60,000,000 in investments. Drudge missed this juciy tidbit of history.
Hillary was having an affair with Janet Reno. When Hillary told Reno to "man up" or risk losing ol' Hillary, Reno ordered the attack on the Branch Davidian compound to prove to Hillary that she indeed had cojones. Drudge missed this one too.
But, despite these lapses in coverage,I'm going to start getting all my information from Drudge from now on.
Now let's get some sanity back to our democracy and make the vote available only to property owners as our founding fathers intended. And to be true to the original intent of our ff's, women and blacks cannot own property.
We'll be able to stop ACORN in it's nutty tracks!
