Drum troops waiting for Obama's Afghanistan plan
Lots of reporting in the news over the weekend about President Obama's impending strategy shift in the way ahead in Afghanistan. Fort Drum was linked enough to a 30,000 troop surge that the Army base near Watertown released this statement last night:
The President is in the process of determining a way ahead in Afghanistan. It would be inappropriate for us to speculate on that strategy until the President makes an official announcement and we are notified of any 10th Mountain Division involvement in support of that strategy.
Until that time, the 1st Brigade Combat Team and the rest of the division will continue to train, plan and maintain readiness in order to meet any future mission requirements.

Where is the outrage? Where are the protesters screaming about a lack of action? Where's the exit strategy? The guy's getting a giant pass on all this. I was under the impression we'd have finished the war, closed Gitmo and be free of the Patriot Act by now. Who is making excuses for whom now?
Ah, I shouldn't be so hard on him. After all he's got "date night" and "movie night" and golf plans and basketball plans...he's busy. What was I thinking?
Bret4207: The weekly Potsdam Peace Vigil which ran continuously from November 2002 until Obama's inauguration has been resumed.
Well, that's fine Dale, but will that be splashed across the banner at the NY Times or appear on MSNBC?
Pushback from the left on Obama policies does get national play--look at single-payer health advocates, gay marriage advocates, as well as opponents of the Afghan and Iraq wars. Things are at a simmer, rather than on a boil on Obama's left, but that will likely change as his policies advance.
Bret is correct to ask where is the media coverage of the ongoing, but admittedly disheartened, peace movement? Yes, us "bleeding hearts" have become disheartened. The numbers on the street are smaller. But the truth is, the corporate controlled media (that includes MSNBC), has chosen to vastly downplay coverage these last 8+ years, even of very large (200,000+) events. Of which there have been several.
Remember Phil Donahue lost his job in network TV, because he refused to play cheerleader to Bush's illegal and ill planned invasion of Iraq.
Also, like, man, the media is fairly burned out, man, over covering the peace movement. We've not become radicalized and militarized as people were in the '60s. Perhaps a lack of a draft could account for some of that. Now, these new, flashy, gun toting, Tea Party, Birthers and such, are sexy and FOX News ready. They get lots of coverage.
Our heroic President is in a double bind when it comes to these wars. Would the Bret's of our nation lable Obama a traitor to the United States if Obama were to issue the order to immediately end these wars? Would they screamafrom the rooftops of FOX Noise that Obama is a friend of the Muslim terrorists? They are doing that just now with the Fort Hood massacre.
Our chances of success (whatever that may have meant) in Aghganistan were blown by Bush/Cheney when they diverted our resources to an unnecessary invasion and occupation of Iraq.
The capture of Osama Bin Laden in the mountains of Tora Bora was blown by Bush/Cheney.
If there are Bret's out there who opposed to these wars - to the tragic loss of life, limbs, health and minds - the bleeding of our national treasure (the boys and girls) and the bleeding of our national treasury. Come join us.
Saturday vigils at the Potsdam Post Office, 11 - 12, rain, sleet, snow or ice rain. Those are our weather options. Sorry. Bring mittens.
Frank, first off Donahue lost his show to horrible ratings. At least be honest about it. He was old and tired and his style seemingly didn't fit what was wanted at the time.
Could it be that your beloved, heroic, Messiah Obama never intended to fulfill his promises? That he was just saying what it took to get elected? He seems to love the Patriot Act now. He seems to have no issue with leaving both theaters in limbo. He's far more concerned with "Date Night" and golf apparently than with the wars, energy or the economy.
I'm all for bringing the war to an end too. I doubt we'd agree on how to do it. To just up and leave negates the sacrifice our people have made. The Iraqis and Afghans need to step up to the plate, the UN need to get off it's duff and take part. If they all refuse in 6 months time, then fine, cut and run. Screw 'em to put it bluntly. We're (the US) is already public enemy #1 to the rest of the world, might as well act like it . Kick the UN out, erect the border fence and lets round up all the illegals and ship them home. Forget being politically correct and focus our attention on Islamic types instead of Grandma at the airports and such.
But that will never happen and no one will ever hold The Messiahs feet to the fire and nothing will change and we'll soon be a copy of Spain.
