Did Team Hoffman "panic" on election night?

The Washington Independent is asking why Doug Hoffman conceded so quickly on election night, with thousands of uncounted ballots and plenty of questions still unanswered.

Why did Hoffman concede in the first place? That I’d credit to the campaign’s overconfidence. They went into election day planning for a clear victory...

When votes started coming in far, far below their expectations, they lost hope very quickly.

Hoffman himself was so devastated during his election night speech that he temporarily forgot to mention that he was conceding the election — Mike Long ran onstage with a note reminding him to — and he left the election party making no more statements to the press.

Simply put, I think Hoffman panicked on election night and is now honestly, frantically trying to undo a mistake. I don’t know if he or his team realize the long-term political damage of this.

This read of election night squares with my experience.

When I arrived at Hoffman HQ, the mood wasn't just buoyant, it was certain.

Rob Ryan, Doug Hoffman's spokesman, boasted to reporters that he was wearing his RINO tie, a kind of victory trophy for having shoved Dede Scozzafava aside.

(Hoffman's failure to reach out to Scozzafava after she withdrew may have cost him the election.)

When the vote started coming in, with Bill Owens actually leading, people at the Hotel Saranac were shocked and devastated.

One Hoffman supporter pointed out to me quietly that Hoffman had lost his home town of Saranac Lake, where he grew up and stationed his campaign office.

Put simply, the Conservatives were expecting a coronation. As I've written before, I expected the same thing.

But voters get the final say. And unless Mr. Hoffman can provide evidence to the contrary, the voters have spoken plainly.

I was following the returns and election news via Twitter on Election Night. I noticed that Hoffman's concession came within five minutes of the tweet saying that Fox News was projecting Owens as the winner. It could have been the Oswego County numbers that pushed Hoffman's early concession, but the timing is interesting.

Dale this is a serious question. Do you have any qualms about posting comments? I don't think you should but perhaps your employer should for the sake of objectivity.

Guy can't count. Simple as that.

The simple fact is that he lost the election. His recent retraction implies that he now thinks he conceded too soon. He really seems out of touch with the elecorate. As a side note, there seems to me a parallel between the candidate and the chosen location for election night . A once cherished landmark the Hotel Saranac is now deteriorating due to the neglect and miserliness of the current owner who once espoused what great things he would do with the building. I will refrain from the other parallel between the two because I suspect that NCPR would consider it libelous.

Anon 2:04: It's a fair question and one I have given some thought to. As web manager at North Country Public Radio, part of my job is to read every comment on every blog post and every news story. Yikes! I also have to make decisions about when comments cross the line of civility and to decide either to delete them, or to push back against their tone in a comment.

When I do comment myself, I always use my full name, never posting anonymously or with a pseudonym. I try to keep my personal political preferences out of my comments (as much as one can when responding to political conversations) and try to inject myself into those conversations in ways that are useful, factual and respectful.

I am not a news reporter and don't pretend to be. Even so, I do feel an obligation to be as objective as I can in any views I share in my comments. The In Box is widely read by the news staff and the NCPR management. To date, no one here has objected to any of my comments, or to the idea of me posting comments.

If others in this conversation feel that I have crossed the line in my moderation efforts or my comments, I'd like to hear from them.

Dale,
You have no right to an opinion.

I've never visited this blog before, but I cannot help but comment on whether or not Dale should feel comfortable with the original comment he posted (to wit, the remark about the timing of the Hoffman concession speech coming five minutes after FOX News projected Owens the winner).

IMHO, this is silly. Dale's comment didn't include an opinion, it merely pointed out data. He didn't use the data to go anywhere, or to suggest anything, all he did was make an observation.

I, for one, did not know the timing before I read Dale's comment. It has given me more information than I had before, and that's always helpful.

Dale, from my spot in the cheap seats, comment away.

I was watching FOX News on election night. CNN, MSNBC ran Hoffman's concession speech. For several minutes after Hoffman had conceded in Saranac Lake, Shepherd Smith was still saying that the race in NY's 23rd was too close to call. Finally, about 8 - 10 minutes late, Smith, looking uncomfortable, announces Hoffman's concession.

I was surprised that Hoffman conceded so early in the count. Does this demonstrate poor political judgement and leadership on his part? Did Hoffman and his team panic? A good case can be made.
I found it puzzling that FOX News took so long in getting around to reporting the concession speech.
Dale, did not FOX have an on the spot reporter in at the Hotel Saranac? Had Hoffman won, I'm sure Smith would have reported the outcome immediately.

Doug is claiming he was "forced" to concede.

Anon. said above: "Doug is claiming he was "forced" to concede." Worrisome. Look at my eyebrow...I'm concerned.

Don't worry dear Anon. FOX News and I are looking into this very serious situation.

It appears that the HAZEL-NUTS (a militant offshoot of ACORN), are zen masters of mind control (see the movie "Men Who Stare At Goats" to see how the DOD does it).

Anywho, the HAZEL-NUTS had a mole planted at the Saranac Hotel who kept staring at Doug, causing poor Doug to bleat out a concedence speech.

We will post the moles' name as soon as we dig him out.

Oh, by the way, I learned that word "concedence" from my hero, President G. W. Bush.

Hey, if that O'Reilly wannabe Steven Colbert can make up a word like "truthiness" is not the former Commander In Chief allowed to...nay...entitled to create new words that give meaning to what he means?

Think about it.

It would appear that Mr. Hoffman does not react well under pressure. He showed that in his few appearances answering questions, on election night, and now in the recount process.

Worse yet, they are panicking now.

For the record, I find Dale Hobson's infrequent comments factual, illuminating, and valuable in understanding the topic at hand.

He also starts acting pretty super when he takes off his glasses.
He wears red leotards all year long. Strange...huh?
Keeps one of those antique phone booths in his house.

I'm trying to figure out if he's Santa or what's the deal.

He is
