Today's Clear Winner: The Palin Movement

A lot of questions will remain unanswered until the polls close Tuesday night, but one thing is absolutely certain:

The conservative movement that cohered around former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin in 2008 has emerged as the vibrant core of the modern Republican Party.

Moderates and pragmatists within the GOP -- leaders as varied as Michael Steele and Newt Gingrich -- had staked a slice of the party's future on leaders like Dede Scozzafava.

The argument is simple: Without a chunk of moderate and even liberal Republicans winning in "blue" districts, it will be very very difficult to rebuild a majority in Congress.

But conservatives see this very differently. They're convinced that much of the GOP's sag in recent years has stemmed from a liberalization of the Republican establishment.

Even George W. Bush flirted with "compassionate" conservatism in ways that angered rank-and-file activists.

Now that movement leaders -- and groups like Club for Growth -- have sent Scozzafava packing, they are clearly kingmakers within the party.

There's just one more big item on the to-do list, and that's getting Doug Hoffman, standard-bearer and political phenomenon, elected.

If he falls short on Tuesday, look for a fresh round of finger-pointing, acrimony and indecision with the GOP.

But if he wins, conservative Republicans will have a clear message for their leaders in Washington.

Don't stray outside the ideological lines that we draw, or we'll cut your candidates off at the knees every time.

It seems quite possible that Hoffman will win this, though I dearly hope otherwise.

But what will that mean, really? In 2008 John McHugh won with 65% of the vote. The 23rd is a solid republican district, and John McHugh had no trouble winning it every two years. Hoffman now has the support and endorsement of the RNC, in a sure-win Republican district. A narrow win for him, which seems likely, proves nothing. The Beck-Palin-Taliban wing of the Republican party will spin a Hoffman win on every Sunday-morning talk show, but it will mean nothing. Perhaps that's why Dede bailed?

Why the republicans always try moving left to make themselves democrat lite is beyond me, they win much more often when there is a clear distinction between the two parties. Right now, the dems are running hard left as dictated to them by George Soros and his MoveOn.org crowd. The republicans should be right of center. Every poll has shown that twice as many people identify themselves as conservative than those who identify themselves as liberal, but yet those identifying themselves as conservative don't identify themselves as republicans for the simple reason the republicans have become where the democrats used to be before their turn to the far left. Blame George Bush, John McCain and people like that for that mess. Sarah Palin and the Tea Party and Town Hall participants are forcing the republicans to perform a self correction.

Interesting to note, the latest CNN Poll found these results regarding Palin:

She's considered 'not a typical politican' by 65 percent (65-34)

'a good role model for women' by 64 percent (64-35)

'caring about the needs of people like you' by 56 percent (56-43)

'honest and trustworthy' by 55 percent (55-43)

'shares your values' (49/49)

'agrees with you on issues you care about' (48-50)

'is a strong and decisive leader' (47-51)

I'd say that according to this poll the general public rather likes Gov. Palin, no matter what the media says.

Palin on Facebook ...

Time to Unite

I want to personally thank Republican Dede Scozzafava for acting so selflessly today in the NY District 23 race. Now it's time to cross the finish line with Doug Hoffman so that he can get to work for District 23 and the rest of America.

With Congress poised to overhaul one-sixth of our economy with so-called health care “reform” (which is really a government takeover of health care) and with plans to enact a cap-and-tax bill just as our economy struggles to recover, Doug Hoffman will be a voice for fiscal responsibility and common sense in Washington.

We need candidates like Doug now more than ever. In these final days of the campaign, it's vital that Doug continue to receive the enthusiastic support of those who want to bring common sense to Washington. Let’s help make it happen! You can help Doug by visiting his official website today and offering your support: https://www.doughoffmanforcongress.com/donate3.html

I'm not sure Palin is "the leader" of anything. What she and others like her do represent is a chance for those of us fed up with 80 of New Deal politics to get some non-career politicians in Washington. It's career politicians on both sides that have brought us to ruin. Washington (and Albany) needs a good dose of humility and common sense. That's all we're looking for. An end to entitlements and irresponsible spending. And end to tax, tax, tax and every special interest group getting (buying) some new law or regulation. We're broke folks, broke.

The dysfunctional former mayor of Wasilla, AK is your party leader? The woman who couldn't stand the heat and quit in her first term as AK Governor? This is the voice of the "new" Republican party? That's sad, scary, and stupid. The Republican party has been shrinking steadily since the second Bush term. I expect the registrations for independents, blanks, and democrats will be quite healthy if this is the way the Republican party wants to go.

Sarah Palin? Is that the same woman who in interviews couldn't name 1 Supreme Court ruling she disgreed with, one newspaper she reads, what the Bush doctrine is, what the bailout was about, etc.? I honestly don't know how Katie Couric was able to keep from bursting out in laughter. Anyone with a high school diploma should be able to answer those questions.

According to McCain aides she didn't know what countries are in NAFTA and whether Africa is continent or a country.
Most polls that Im aware of show Americans don't think Palin is knowledgable or qualified (Who in there right mind would) enough to be president.

My votes are based on tax & fiscal policy because without economic freedom there is no personal freedom. That last thing this country needs is more tax & spend career politicians. Tuesday I will vote for fiscal sanity and against the Pelosi-Reid-Obama socialist policies that Owens will no doubt support.
Dede Scozzafava took the high road today and for that she should be commended. I wish her well.
It's funny how the Palin insults seem only to come from those too gutless to attach their name to the comment. But then again, personal attacks have always been the modus operandi of people without facts or courage. No doubt they'll assault me next for speaking the truth.

Palin is just one of us with a loud voice. IMHO, she just wants to strengthen the Republican party, and beat Obama and his socialist cronies.

IMHO Sarah Palin is one of the most disastrously divisive politicians since George Bush and she's really just a front gal for the Good OleBoys Party.

But with one anonymous writer saying "[G]od help us" another saying "God bless Sarah Palin" and a third not wanting to live on his knees, she sure makes for lively discussion.

I agree with anonymous who wrote "sad, scary and stupid".

Let's see, Gov. Sarah Palin stands for smaller government, lower taxes, strong national defense, and a commitment to individual liberty.

Tell me what is so right nutwing about that. Stop listening to the left wing liberal fringe nut-wing media and thing for yourself.

Since when does a bail-out-half-way-through-her-only-term former governor of Alaska get to have so much influence on what happens in northern New York? We can't even see Russia from here. The only thing we have in common is the weather.
