Ouch: Pataki backs Hoffman

Dede Scozzafava was one of Gov. George Pataki's loyal foot soldiers in the state Assembly. The two are viewed as Republicans of similar stripe -- moderates, pragmatists.

But Pataki's message to a Conservative Party dinner last night in New York City was about as crystal clear as they come.

He's backing Doug Hoffman.

"He will fight for our proud servicemen and women at Fort Drum, our dairy farmers in Lowville and our manufacturers in Plattsburgh," Pataki said in a statement. "And Doug Hoffman can win."
There it is in four words. Republicans now clearly view the Lake Placid accountant as their best hope to hold NY-23.

And in politics, winning trumps loyalty almost every time. A long weekend ahead for Scozzafava.

One footnote: Pataki's speech looked very much like a campaign speech. But when the former governor noted that he won his three terms as governor with Conservative Party backing, there was a notable silence from the crowd.

No applause. Watch it here.

In the long-term a Hoffman win could be seen as a victory for Democrats. It will embolden other far-right conservatives to run in districts where they are unelectable. People in the USA are nowhere near as conservative as these wingnuts believe.

PCS is living in the past...due to our current government driving us off a left sided cliff...people who are called right wing by the liberal loons are actually more right of center...when you;re far enough on the left..even a centrist looks right wing to you.

I like how pataki cited the issue of taxes when endorsing hoffman. Didn't pataki give us the highest combined state and local tax burden in the nation? I mean he had 12 years to fix taxes and the upstate economy and he failed miserably.

I don't blame any true republican for endorsing Mr Hoffman, hes the only choice. Ms Scozzafava has proven time and time again that she votes how she feels and not what her constituents would want her to, case in point her stance on same sex marriages and i'm sure there are others. so all i can say is Vote for Doug Hoffman, the only republican in the race

Pataki? That Pataki? You got to be kidding.
He left office in disgrace. He , with a Republican controlled State House were the primary culprits in creating this mess. This is like Cheney complaining about Obama's Afghan strategy last week. Cheney, Bush , Rumsfeld and the rest of their Conservative Cabal never bothered to have a strategy in Iraq or Afghanastan, just mission Accomplished staged political news ops.
Pataki??? This is a joke right. The Owens and Dede operatives must have started this rumor....
