Breaking: Hoffman pulls out of tonight's debate

Here's a message sent this morning from Ronald Lombard at News 10 Now:

This is tough news. We're still pushing for Mr. Hoffman to attend the debate in Plattsburgh later this week.

Good Morning All. Regrettably, we must cancel today’s scheduled debate. Last evening, a representative of the Doug Hoffman campaign contacted us, saying their candidate would not attend. That came despite the fact that they had committed to the debate early last week, regardless of Bill Owens’ participation. The Owens campaign this morning confirmed they will not attend. This situation leaves us with no choice but to cancel the debate. We feel this is extremely unfortunate for the voters of the 23rd District, who will be left with very little opportunity to evaluate these candidates’ positions on the issues prior to next Tuesday’s Special Election.

Makes us wonder what everyone is hiding from.

Maybe the two of them should just stay home on Nov. 3rd too.

Typical politicians....they would rather trash each other via the media outlets, than face each in person and deal directly with the issues at hand!

All the candidates know what time the debate is scheduled. I say, continue with it as planned. Whomever shows up gets their thoughts and positions aired. If no one shows up, open the phone lines to listeners who have something to say about that!

Maybe get a screen and show tonight's "Glenn Beck" show....

Hoffman pulled out, he's the only one hiding

Schedule the time regardless and let Dede show those attending that she is the only real candidate in this race. This mudslinging and hiding behind the bushes campaign of the other two is disgusting. I pray to god that the voters are smarter then to be taken in by outside money, slander and underhanded tactics of the campaigns of Owens and Hoffman. Dede is the only one talking about our local issues and the only one that will be support Northern NY in Washington.

Give Dede credit. She appears to be the only one willing to " man up" to open debate..
I understand Hoffman not showing, his handlers know he would come off as a clueless clown in a debate, but I am truly disappointed in Owens..

Hoffman and Owens, neither will participate...they are leaving it to their 30 second sound bits full of lies...

See who is still standing come Nov 4th...Go Dede!!!!!!!!!1

Hoffman pulled out because Glenn Beck is having him on at 5pm. He was scheduled for last week but had to cancel on Beck because of local media pressure to go to the Wanakena meet the candidates thing. No coverage of what he said, very brief coverage of the event itself. Can't say as I blame him. He gets to speak to a larger audience now. He is not about to make the same mistake twice. I would do exactly the same thing.

Hmmm...Didn't know Glen Beck lived in the 23rd District. Cool!

All that counts is "winning," right? Then the "winner" goes to work in DC -- for all the "outsiders" who funded their campaign ... what a deal ... change? Not around here.

Did Owens give a reason for not participating?

How many voters in the 23rd who will see Hoffman on Glen Beck were not already planning to vote for him.

I have to wonder if Mr Hoffman has come under the delusion that he is now a national conservative celebrity...rather than that on Nov 4, after he has lost (and he will, the question being does he take DeDe down with him)Sarah P. and Glenn and Dick Armey will have "lost" his phone number from their rolodexes??

What was the point of going anyway - Owens wasn't going to be there anywhere. He went to one with Dede the other night and Owens did not show. I would have made the same decision.

It is not unusual for elected officials to forget who it is they represent, but Hoffman seems to hold the people in contempt before ever being elected. That may be a new record.

Hoffman is the only real choice Dede is a liberal Democrat who calls herself a Republican just check her voting record. Owens is a Democrat need I say more. We need to get away from the two partys and get the Conservative party in there. The Dems are trying to cut and run in Afghanistan and the Repubs are much to watered down anymore.

Hold the people in contempt - you are kidding me right. Why are you so critical of the man when he actual did try to schedule up some early on and the other camps refused. He even cut Beck and went to that thing last week and Owens did not show. Owens is the one who is showing the contempt - he is too good for the people to even consider showing or scheduling. It is sickening to hear people who are HIPPOcrites playing double standard games. If you call out Hoffman on this you better be calling out Owens too.

yeah hoffman gave them like four or five different dates for one and none of them would do it, shouldnt all of them had that at a priority in the first place? queen dede did not want to because she did not want to legitimize his campaign, sad dede should have been the first to sign up for that one being an assembly lady

Glenn Beck does not live or vote in the 23rd. Keep in mind that Doug Hoffman also does not live or
vote in the 23rd. Do we want an outsider representing us?

Why was the debate scheduled in Syracuse, which is out of the 23rd anyway? They should have held to debate in NNY.

Dede is the only choice for independents. She has proven that she will listen to all sides and then decide, that is what an Independent does. Hoffman is a yes man for those that run him and has never said once that he intended to work with anyone, just his hard line group. Owens has no track record that he would listen to all sides of a problem.
Not an endorsement for anybody, but it is a fact.

It is a shame that Owens and Hoffman care so little for the constituents of this 23rd CD. I have been around for a long time and I have never seen such cowardly actions. They have both spread their half truths and lies about Dede and they know if they go face to face with her she will show everyone exactly what they are-untrustworthy men who do not deserve to serve this district. Please go to the polls November 3 and vote for the candidate who has nothing to hide and isn't afraid to stand up for what she believes in-Vote for Dede Scozzafava!

Hillary didn't even live in NY State and she got elected. While I have to say I'm disappointed in Hoffman and Owens, whats the diff? All they'll do is join in the tax and spend politics no matter what.

Hoffman is not running to represent " us." He is running to represent the far right wing of the conservative Party. The Idealogues. They are paying the freight and they will calll the tune.
In fairness to Hoffman, I don't think he has tried to disguise that.
