Hoffman wins Week Two In 23rd special election
By my (obviously very) subjective scorecard, Lake Placid accountant and Conservative candidate Doug Hoffman wins Week 2 of the as-yet-unscheduled special election.
Why?
1. Hoffman won a lot of pretty glowing coverage for his call for cuts to government spending, and his pledge to vote against any future tax or fee increases. (Unfortunately, Hoffman offered no details about which government programs he would cut, or how he would reduce deficits.)
2. His campaign is clearly triggering a heated response from Republicans backing Dede Scozzafava, which means Hoffman is on their radar screen. That's an important first step toward real credibility for any third party candidate.
3. The other candidates had lackluster weeks:
Scozzafava was once again forced to talk about her ties to the troubled Scozzafava family retail business, when it was revealed that she owns more than $1 million in preferred stock in the company. And she drew fire in an editorial posted in the influential conservative newspaper the Washington times.
Democrat Bill Owens was largely invisible. He held no public appearances that we're aware of and his website remains an empty shell, with no information on his positions or ideas. He was also panned by the influential left-leaning website DailyKos.

This guy walks into a bank and says, "I only earn $20,000 a year, but could you loan me $120,000?" Sounds like the start of a bad joke, right? I'm sorry to say that, in those same proportions, the man seeking the loan is Uncle Sam.
The government has spent so much money that, if it's not reversed, they will have effectively handcuffed the future of our country's economy. Here's what I mean. The federal government's debt is nearly 12 trillion dollars. But, you may say, the IRS rakes in so much cash. Just look at the salary I start with versus what I actually get in my paycheck. Well, how much do you think the IRS collects in a year? The sad fact is, it's only around 2 trillion a year. That's right. In a whole year we collect 2, and already almost 12 in debt, with no end in sight!
Think you're paying a lot in taxes now? As Al Jolson used to say, "You ain't seen nothin' yet."
Conservatives like Doug Hoffman carrying this message will certainly prove victorious, while others, including non-conservative Republicans will be handed defeat by an America that now knows better.

"Plan from Strength"
Hoffman got the third week off to a rousing start with today's feature story in the Weekly Standard, written by Kenneth Tomlinson.

One of these days someone is going to call these guys on their anti-taxes position and its impact on the North Country. NNY gets about 4x as much back as it pays in from NYS. I imagine we do very well from the federal government too. So cutting programs and taxes will only hurt us up here. If we really believes this stuff, fine. Just keep it up, but also tell us that we will need to tighten our belts (some more).
I really am not sure how you can call Doug Hoffmann a legitamate candidate. I have met Mr. Hoffmann several times now and I am just not impressed. While, I agree with a lot of his principals over the Dem and GOP candidate, I just simply cannot believe this guy will be the advocate we need in Congress.
John McHugh was a GREAT Representative and we need someone who can at least articulate what we have in NNY. I'm not sure Doug or this Owens guy have any of that ability.
Only met Dede Scozzafava once, but she is proven...she'll do fine for three years and then we'll carve up this district into something more managable.
I understand that your blog is subjective, but I think its a little careless to give weeks to candidates who don't stand a chance of getting 10% of the vote. Just being realistic.
