Extremism on the Right

A number of people have commented at the In Box that they think I'm exaggerating concerns that the Right in America is flirting with dangerous extremism.

To further this discussion, I want to urge you to read a prominent essay published today by Newsmax.com.

This is one of the most influential news and information sites read by movement conservatives.

The article, by regular commentator John Perry, suggests that a time is fast approaching when the U.S. military should stage a coup to displace our democratically elected president.
There is a remote, although gaining, possibility America’s military will intervene as a last resort to resolve the “Obama problem.” Don’t dismiss it as unrealistic.
Mr. Perry argues that Barack Obama, who has filled his cabinet with former Wall Street executives, and placed Republicans in charge of the Defense Department and the Army, is a Marxist.

(Our own former Republican congressman, John McHugh, accepted Mr. Obama's appointment to serve as Army Secretary earlier this month.)

Mr. Perry then goes on to fantasize about a fast-approaching future in which our elected Commander In Chief -- chosen less than a year ago -- will be made into a figurehead by a military junta.
Skilled, military-trained, nation-builders would replace accountability-challenged, radical-left commissars...the president would be detailed for ceremonial speech-making.
Mr. Perry argues that this kind of event -- literally, the destruction by force of our most sacred democratic and legal principles -- is not only desirable but necessary.
Unthinkable? Then think up an alternative, non-violent solution to the Obama problem. Just don’t shrug and say, “We can always worry about that later.”
Mr. Perry is not writing parody or humor. He is articulating a real and present sentiment among some on the Right.

Every decent American knows that we don't need an alternative, non-violent way to change leadership.

This is a nation of laws. We have elections. Mr. Obama won the last election by a sizable margin just ten months ago.

People who oppose his agenda should organize and attempt to defeat the Democrats peacefully at the ballot box.

Two important points:

1. Yes, there have been times in the past when Democrats and progressives were called upon to repudiate extremism in their own ranks, and on the margins of their movement.

2. And yes, only a very small percentage of conservatives are purveying this sort of bile.

But this is the time when every decent conservative should repudiate fully and unreservedly this kind of unpatriotic, dangerous, and malignant language.

Thanks for finding and sharing this. Truly shocking. You are NOT exaggerating the rise of dangerous extremism. Before someone makes the claim, let me preemptively say that it is ridiculous to argue that this sort of nonsense appears on both the right and left. No similarly credentialed liberal or left commentator ever said anything so treasonous in even the darkest days of the Bush debacle. The radical right has become unhinged from reality.

A quick scan of right wing websites shows that this is not an aberration. Talk of insurrection and overthrow of our elected government is all over the web. They may be a minority (I'm certain they are) but they are serious. What I cannot comprehend is how they can rationalize proposals to overthrow an elected government and set up a military dictatorship as "defending the Constitution". They must never have read it.

Apparently the Perry post was too over-the-top even for Newsmax. The post is gone from their site and does not show under Perry's archives, or at the link provided above. Most I can find now is quotes from the post at MediaMatters.

Remember Timothy McVeigh? Well up until that point there was a burgeoning militia movement in this country. McVeigh forced many of the wannabees to re-think their flirtation with the militias and they largely disappeared. Apparently the kook fringe is alive and well in one of our major parties. The Republicans are playing with fire.

Before celebrating the end of militias, please read the Fall 2009Intellegence Report of the Southern Poverty Law Center. A brief quote: "One federal agency estimates that 50 new militia training groups have sprung up in less than two years. Sales of guns and ammunition have skyrocketed amid fears of new gun control laws, much as they did in the 1990s."

The conservative movement now has a new hero in John Perry. He'll be in demand as a speaker and promoted as a candidate for office. The rightwingnuts will stop at nothing, including overthrowing the government and tearing up the Constitution to get their way. Watch how many conservatives denounce Perry - there may be a few but most will not.

Get ready for the next US Civil War if these people get their way.

I've been reading the rational (to use the word very loosely) of these screwballs that the oath which military officers take was written without the part about obeying the president's orders precisely so that the military could act to remove a president who was acting unconstitutionally.

Any fool who reads the US Constitution with any degree of comprehension knows that determining whether acts of the congress or the executive branch are constitutional is the power granted to the Supreme Court, not some self-selected cabal of military officers. To argue otherwise is to reject the Constitution as the basis of our government.

My God, you guys are scaring the hell out of me.

I just left a comment about garbage and burn barrels (thinking that's a real issue in our lives) and you're talking about the potential threat of a military overthrow of the US government! Are you sure it isn't just another bit of the lunatic fringe!?... you know, the ones that have a soapbox in the 24/7 media we have now.

Even with the extremists out there I have always truly believed in the integrity of the US Constitution and the sanity of the majority of the American public... but this stuff really does scare the hell out of me. I hope you guys have just picked up on some whacko nut case, out on his own, and not a trend we're going to see more of.

The far right loves to throw around buzzwords decrying the left; liberalism, socialism, or worse, communism. Yet we hear no such labeling of the far right; nationalism, elitism, or worse, fascism.

The very first post in this thread says, (anonymously of course), "No similarly credentialed liberal or left commentator ever said anything so treasonous in even the darkest days of the Bush debacle." WRONG! There were books and a movie advocating the ASSINATION of Bush. The crap is spread pretty evenly.

The guy who wrote that article worked for Jimmy Carter. Apparently he's had a change of heart since then. I was unable to access the story, but this is the only place I've seen it mentioned, and I assure you I frequent plenty of sites that would give all you liberal's the hives, rather like "Democratic Underground" and "The Daily Kos" do to me.

Rather than worrying about what some nut job writes on on a "news source" that the internet version of "The National Enquirer", maybe you people should be realizing that there is a pretty fair sized number of your neighbors who have had it with taxes, taxes, taxes, the continuing loss of rights and freedoms, the whole "Globalization" thing and mostly with the career politicians in Washing ton and Albany robbing us blind while blaming it on the other crooks, I men, politicians in the other party. They're ALL crooks and all need to be tossed out. Establish term limits across the board and lets give some representative democracy back to the taxpayers rather than big business, unions and Hollywood.

Nobody sane wants a revolution folks. But the silent majority in this nation is finally stirring. That doesn't make us nuts, that makes us activists! That title is not limited to liberal environmentalists anymore.

I spent 10 years active duty with the USAF (4 enlisted, 6 officer 64-74) and another 17+ as a DoD civilian. I submit that the U.S. Constitution Article II Section 2 declares that the President is the Commander in Chief; how in hell can anyone suggest that U.S. military officers do not have to obey the President?

Let me take a stab at it. When I was initially inducted a very high percentage of military and DoD civilians were "conservatives" probably on the order of 75%. I was drafted and joined the USAF. At that time the average draftee had roughly 2 years of college today enlistees probably average 10-11th grade high school, officers have to have 4 year college degrees as they did in my day with a few exceptions back then. The advent of the all volunteer military had moved the conservative percentage to above 90% for the aggregate and likely above 95% for the military by the time I retired in 94. My guess it is even higher today. Fanatics often invent reasoning and justifications to attain their ends. I have long voiced my discomfort with the all volunteer military for the reasons entertained in the "extremism .." blog and that the best reason to continue the draft is to ensure that there are significant numbers of intelligent, rational and contentious humans in our military such that an out of control general or three might think twice if they were unsure that their troops would support their attempt at something illegal such as a coup. Unfortunately it appears that the writer of the "extremism .." blog understands this shortcoming and is bent on taking advantage of such.

Ken, the current court case regarding Obamas eligibility to serve is at the Discovery phase now. I don't see how anyone can argue the CIC's orders are to be followed, but at the same time if he's not eligible to serve in the first place, then is it treasonous to ask for him to provide the proof he should have provided long before the primaries?

I served my 4 years in the USMC, I would not have the guts to do what that guys out west is doing. No matter how this turns out he's toast. He must know that and have weighed his options. I may not agree with his method, but I admire his backbone.

Please also remember this is one writer out of how many? His story may appeal to a few idiots who have no comprehension of what his scenario would mean, but to the vast majority of "Tea Baggers" his story is just as scary as it is to the libs here.

Those of you who are so concerned about your neighbors feelings of betrayal by the Gov't owe it to yourselves to see just why so many of us are worried and are becoming active. Things CAN NOT continue on like they have, it will self destruct shortly. Unless there is a major change in spending a taxation very soon the dollar will either collapse entirely or the Gov't will devalue the dollar. In either case, you ain't seen nothin' yet as far as hard times go.

Really guys? So we've never heard of "The Cristian Right" or "Right wing Christian Conservatives"? Funny, I've never hear of "Left wing atheist Liberals".

And if you want Fascism, what else do you call the current Administration?

Dictionary.com defines fascism as: a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, etc., and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism.

Explain to me how the current administration meets the criteria listed above? Dictator? President Obama certainly does not have complete power, nor has he forcibly suppressed the opposition, and criticism is alive and thriving. Regimenting all industry and commerce? All? Every aspect? As for the aggressive nationalim and the racism, it seems to me that the opposition forces have the monopoly on that.

Gee Pat, the guy has to start somewhere. So far he's taken over 2 of our major car makers (while disenfranchising 10's of thousands of stock holders), is going to nationalize health care and do in the insurance companies (while ruining hundreds of thousands of investors in those companies), intends to get Cap and Trade passed (ruining ANYONE who has to buy electricity among other things), is actively working to suppress free speech through "The Fairness Doctrine" and control of the internet ( I forget the name their using), is actively working to brand all his protesters as "right wing racists and violent revolutionaries"....there's more of course, but you get the idea.

As for nationalism there are differing flavors of that. Obamas nationalism is just as real as your idea of nationalism. It's just that Obamas form of nationalism ignores the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Those evil right winger Tea Baggers actually think the Founders had some good ideas. Crazy, huh?

Then you have ACORN and the Black Panthers using voter intimidation at the polls and SEIU beating a BLACK MAN who was protesting Obamas policies. No, no use of force by Obamas version of the SS there.

Open your eyes Pat. Obama is the current problem. If McCain had been in there it would be just as bad, but different. If we don't work to clean up the corruption in Washington (and Albany), if we don;t work to cut spending and taxation, if we don't work to save what left of our country it's all going down the tubes.
