Another flurry of ATV deaths
We've had a lively debate here about ATV fatalities in New York. We've had two more kids die on 4-wheelers Upstate in the last week, young twins in Shaghticoke. From the Albany Times-Union.
'This is every parent's worst nightmare,'' said Mechanicville Mayor Anthony J. Sylvester, who knew the twins' father from his work in the city. ''And to lose two kids at once, and twins at that. Just horrible.'The State Police are also reporting that a 48-year-old man died on Sunday in the North Country town of Louisville. Dennis Martin apparently hit some trees after failing to make a turn.

More tragedy involving ATVs. My heart goes out to the families. When will we start taking this problem seriously?
First, children have no place operating these machines. Additionally, NYS needs to step in with a way to provide operator training/licensing so that operators must show some level of competency before they are allowed to drive ATVs.
I am certain this spark the ire of the ATV supporters, so have at it.
I too think we need more laws regarding these extremely dangerous machines, and first and foremost there should NEVER be a child under the age of 16 allowed to operate one!! Maybe that needs to be kicked up to age 18. Better yet, lets ban all ATV's, they are nothing but death traps and most doctors will attest to that!
And while we're at it lets ban snowmobiles, motorcycles, ultra-light planes... boats, what the heck cars, trucks, planes.
Let's face it, in a free society we get to pick our poison so lets set up some sensible rules and enforce them. Educations would be great, but we don't even do that very well with cars.
Drivers Ed isn't even part of the regular school year anymore.
As we "pick our own poison", one should be able to assume that the person then takes responsibility for that decision. Unfortunately, today's society rarely takes responsibility for their own actions. It is always someone else's fault.
Should a person wish to allow their child to operate these motorized death traps and the child suffers injury, or worse, dies; then there should be no lawsuit against the manufacturer, dealer, etc.
I am with you on the free society thing. Our rules tend to be blanket rules that are not well-reasoned that only inhibit those tend to obey the rules.
