Palin performs

Whatever people may say about the performance of Governor Sarah Palin, it's clear that she exceeded expectations.

The last week -- two weeks? -- have been as bad for the Republican veep choice as they could be.

Verbal gaffes, awkward body language, scandal, the works.

But this debate, combined with word that the Republican National Committee has barnstormed up another $60-plus million dollars (largely on her appeal) stops the bleeding.

It's a fair question whether she was good enough to reverse the current pro-Obama trend. It's even a fair question whether she was better than Democrat Joe Biden.

But on night when her critics were hoping for a meltdown, Palin performed.

If she can maintain this stride, and this small-town tone, through Election Day, then she will arguably have been a political asset for McCain, rather than a liability.

(Again, I think that's a separate question than whether or not she's qualified for the Veep job , or the Presidency.)

You are right, Brian, that she did perform. The operative word is "perform". If we were voting for a performer (actor, talk show host) she would certainly qualify. Qualify for VP? I don't think so. At this crucial time in our country's history I think we need a vice president who is wise, experienced and has been truly tested. That is Joe Biden. Jane D.

"It's even a fair question whether she was better than Democrat Joe Biden." Fair question???
It didn't seem like a true debate by a long shot. I was reminded of the present President's habit of not answering debate quesions but instead launching into the same "talking points" over and over. Both "performances" are reminiscent of trained seals.

Reading the transcripts of the debate should put to rest the "fair" question of who was the better or the two. The audacious sentence sytax and grammer reveal the same disregard for convention that President Bush has made famous.

And far too little has been said of Biden's relatively restrained performance. Miraculously, he managed not to be dismissive or to appear disrespectful of his opponent and apparently was able to follow up on his promise not to be like the condescending John McCain in his debate. P. Martin
